The diffused natural light gliding in from the tensile sheet roofing fitted with glass supported on a central mushroom column renders the space with a sunlit ambience. While the evenings glint and glitter in the warm yellow lighting against the wood and green of the forest backdrop.

Location: Thoraipakkam Type: Corporate Dental Clinic Client: Dr. K V Udhaya Raj Swathed in pastel theme, and furnished with curvilinear profiles, the dental clinic is a compact, bright and casual space. In the 1500sqft, we embraced filleted curves as a visual language- on the wall panelling, furniture, as well as the false ceiling!
Keeping in mind the requirements of the practitioner, we custom-designed the handle less drawers to equip specific tools and gadgets. Furthermore, the laminates for the entire clinic are finger-print resistant. The counter tops made of sintered stone are easily cleanable and precisely scratch-free.
With a touch of greenery, subtle colour palette and accent lighting, we created a calming ambience, without the whites and dreads of a typical hospital.

Location: Maduravoyal, Tamil Nadu Type: Luxury Residence Client: Mr. Sivaprakasham, TNEB former director-general A melodic medley of traditional and contemporary elements, the house designed on a one-ground property and three floors over a stilt, responds brilliantly to the site context. Creating voids and greens in the built mass deconstructs the otherwise boxy form and the spatial arrangement is strictly Vaastu-compliant as per the client’s wishes. The parametrically devised façade of the building is designed to screen from the harsh southern light and (view) of the arterial road, but to also provide viewing decks on every floor.
The multiple courtyards of varying sizes strategically placed at different parts of the house allow for a variety of activities, visually connected throughout. Subsuming landscape at every possible interval brings vitality to the living spaces clad in beautiful earthen stones and wood, furnished with sleek modern furniture and décor!

Location: ECR, Chennai Type: Farmhouse Client: Mr. Arun Within a sprawling property of 40acres, the neatly designed 1000sqft beach house is the outcome of an experimental time problem- designed and constructed within a span of just 30 days! Built with bamboo cladding on plywood supported by steel framework, the petite structure sits on a 3’ high deck, housing a living/dining, kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom.
All the materials used in this project were utilized in the traditional way, in their most natural tendency. Taking cues from the childhood lifestyle of the resident elderly couple, we designed elements within the house to revisit cherished memories. Developed in a vernacular style to utilize natural ventilation brought in by the sea breeze, high windows placed for cross-ventilation also bathe the interiors in warm sunlight!

The grey canvas of textured paint-finished walls and rubber mat flooring are intercepted with yellow highlight neon stickers, wood panelling and partitions. The ceiling is treated with black paint, overlayed with the electrical lines painted bright red in a signature industrial style interior with a pop of colour. Custom-designed hexagonal light installation fitted with dummy wood panels covered the AC ducts across the expanse of the ceiling.
As a thoughtful addition, we craftly embossed the floor and walls with implicit signages to facilitate the circulation and zoning within the space! We picked complementary loose furniture blending with the gym equipment.

STRINGS

STRINGS

Project: Albatross Café - pavilion
Location: Pondicherry highway
Scope of work: Design - Detailing

Designed as an installation pavilion, the parametric structure spreads over the entrance area of the Café Albatross, beneath which is tucked a landscaped outdoor seating and casual gathering space!

The tensile canopy is made of MS steel framework with dyed threads. Infused into the grid is a patterned arrangement of neon strip light, that lustres along the National Highway, catching the eye of the passersby! This pavilion not only maintains the openness that the site so generously offers, but also provides the necessary shading to accommodate alfresco dining and a miniature amphitheatre. The meticulously threaded wires filter the sunlight during the day, creating a play of interesting shadows, reflecting off of the water body bordering the seating. A fluid landscape detail accompanies the canopy, forming a visual coherence between the encompassing form and the encompassed space.

Not a door

NOT A DOOR

Project: Tiny Urban Residence – door detail
Location: MKB Nagar, Chennai
Scope of work: Design – Fabrication – Execution

The idea behind this hidden door is a little sentimental, frivolous perhaps- to tap into our childhood desire for a secret place, the longing for a private room, the doorway to which is visible only to us.

We designed a custom-built hidden door embedded seamlessly into the wooden flutes of the wall panelling, that serves as a discreet portal to the walk-in-wardrobe and washroom, hiding quite in plain sight. To rectify the crowding of four doors, we added an aesthetic touch with this quirky panelling. The value of this fun intervention lies in the craftsmanship and accurate diagramming of the design.

Mars 360

MARS 360

Project: Factory Vestibule Renovation
Location: Coimbatore
Scope of work: Design – PMC

By reusing materials available at the site, we completed the renovation of the factory vestibule for MARS Solar Aqua 360°, a company manufacturing solar panels. This vestibule measuring 200sq.ft was redone with a minimal budget. We as designers and architects, took up this project as an opportunity to redefine interior refurbishing and explore the ideas of reusing site materials to come up with a whole new look!

Pellet wood panels were refurbished from crates that came with the raw material packaging, which were sanded and given a finishing touch of varnish. We picked up any item that we deemed reusable at the site- from grass turfs lying around, to steel cupboard doors. We even got our hands on a few disposed metal scrap sheets from a nearby automotive factory with perforated patterns on them that ultimately became our wall décor! The ceiling installation along the length leads the eye to the vertical plant wall that became the keynote to this harmonious revamp.

Stadium

STADIUM

Project: Competition Proposal
Location: Hypothetical
Scope of work: Design – Detailing

This hypothetical proposal was undertaken by our team to test the efficiency of a formative idea processed into a deliverable design which requires details of fabrication. One of our first attempts at large-scale computational design, the concept takes cues from form and behaviour of coral reefs!

In a classic investigation of biomimicry, the building’s shell is designed as a barrier, akin to how corals screen and protect the fishes underneath them. The parametric façade with circular panels has been devised in response to the calculated distance of the sun path as the determining parameter. Furthermore, we explored the governance of materials in deciding the method of fabrication, from CNC of wood and MDF, to laser cut of metal.

Parametric Wave Table

PARAMETRIC WAVE TABLE

Project: Flavors Multicuisine Restaurant – buffet table
Location: Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu
Scope of work: Design – Fabrication – Execution Design – Fabrication – Turnkey Execution

A parametric façade which undulates to mimic the terrain of the mountains and seamless shelter of the clouds aptly fits into the visual scape of the restaurant. The design intends to merge the local context with the interior detailing.

The wave pattern is created using panelling over brick wall, finished matte polished rubber wood. The 3d geometry was consolidated into a 2d data format, driven by parametric coding, to reduce material wastage and was fabricated by CNC machine cutting. The 500 individual pieces are assembled on site by highly skilled technicians as per the designer’s vision. Our focus on parametric exploration and computational designing to present an innovative output is an important aspect of our design philosophy.
